Workshop: Integrated Methods for Organic Structure Determination - Ted Molinski, University of California, San Diego

Who: Tadeusz F. Molinski, University of California, San Diego
When: 2-4 pm, Wed May 24 & Wed June 7
Where: Bio21 Auditorium
Abstract: NMR is, arguably, the most powerful method for determination of organic molecules molecules in the solution phase, but NMR alone is often insufficient for elucidation of relative and absolute configurations (RC and AC). These workshops will provide insights, through case studies of natural product structure elucidation, of applications using less common spectroscopic methods – for example circular dichroism (CD) and specialized NMR techniques – augmented by organic synthesis. These approaches complement familiar 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy that is the fundamental core of structure elucidation. The natural products covered range from simple to complex molecules including alkaloids and polyketides.
Miminal background-preparation (basic NMR, UV-vis spectroscopy) is required. No prescribed textbooks but reference 1 (Tetrahedron Report #99) may be useful.
