Open House Melbourne is an organisation that aims to promote good design and architecture in Melbourne. This year Bio21 Institute opens its doors to the public as part of the City of Melbourne's Open House 2015Read more on the Open House website.

Designed by architects DesignInc and built by Baulderstone Hornibrook, the Bio21 Institute building provides a balance between function and form, with its unique work environment mixing research, offices, technology and laboratories under one roof.

Program

1) Tours (tours will run every 30 minutes with 10 people per tour - queue at main entry point)

  • Everyday Quantum Mechanics

Tours of the Magnetic Resonance Facility, where synthetic organic chemists, material scientists and biophysicists delve into the structure and function of molecules, proteins and nucleic acids.

  • Lookin' in at Labs

Tours through Level 4 and peer through the windows to laboratories, where amazing developments in the fields of tropical and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as printable solar panels take place every week.

4) Kids' Corner: Colouring complexity

Proteins, cells and nanostructures - Science opens up microscopic and nanoscopic worlds beyond our imaginings. We will provide a colouring-in table with complex scientific structures for kids to colour in.
