About Incidents

The following are Instructions for a range of incident categories. All relevant contacts are listed on the right hand side of the page.

Bomb threats

Person receiving call:

  • Do not hang up the phone
  • Attract someone's attention to notify the dkeizer [at] unimelb.edu.au (Building Emergency Controller)

     (BEC) and security-bio21 [at] unimelb.edu.au (Security at Bio21 Institute)

    (ext 42480 or 42481); University Central Security on extension 46666, 24/7.
  • Do not notify any others of the threat
  • Try to keep the caller talking
  • Remain at the phone until relieved

Chemical spills

  • If spill gives off toxic or suffocating fumes, notify all persons in immediate area, increase ventilation if possible and evacuate the area
  • If spill is a flammable solvent, notify all persons in immediate area, turn off all flames and electrical outlets and evacuate the area
  • Go to the nearest area free of vapour and notify the dkeizer [at] unimelb.edu.au (Building Emergency Controller)

    . Do not re-enter without breathing apparatus
  • Raise the alarm by dialing ext 46666 (24 hours) or security-bio21 [at] unimelb.edu.au (Security at Bio21 Institute)

    on extensions 42480 or 42481
  • Use an emergency spill kit if the spill does not liberate toxic or suffocating fumes and is not a flammable solvent

Fire

  • Quickly assess situation
  • Remove any person from danger (if safe to do so)
  • Close the doors on the fire
  • Raise the alarm by dialing 46666 (University Security) and by activating the break glass fire alarm.
  • Attack the fire with appropriate fire fighting equipment (if trained and safe to do so
  • Follow directions of Warden or Emergency Services Officer
  • Evacuate if necessary.

Gas leak or smell

  • Turn off the tap or valve if possible (if safe to do so)
  • Notify all persons in immediate area, turn off all flames and electrical outlets, and evacuate the area.
  • Notify the BEC
  • Raise the alarm by dialing University Security on extension 46666
  • Keep people away from affected area.

Injury

  • Quickly assess situation (do not enter danger area)
  • Raise the alarm by dialing ext 46666
  • Administer first aid as appropriate
  • Contact your safety officer
  • Keep uninvolved people away

Parcel or substance threat

  • Do not touch or move anything
  • Move away and prevent anyone from entering the area - isolate it
  • Raise the alarm by dialing security University Security ext 46666
  • Contact the BEC
  • Remain calm and follow instructions from security or the police
  • Do not evacuate the building unless requested by police or a warden

Poisoning

  • Raise the alarm by dialing University Security ext. 46666
  • Administer first aid as appropriate (security officers are also trained first aid officers)
  • Try to identify the poison (only if safe to do so)
  • Ring the Poisons Information number on 131126
  • Contact your safety officer
  • Keep uninvolved people away

Suspicious or Threatening people

  • Consider your safety
  • Be deliberate in your actions
  • If possible, move the situation away from other staff
  • Observe the offender (height, weight, age, clothing, speech, disabilities, accent, etc) make notes if you can
  • Warn others unobtrusively to notify Security - Bio21 Inst ext 42480 or 42481 or University Security ext 46666
  • Restrict access to all personnel
  • Evacuate quietly (if necessary)
  • Do not approach offender
  • Refer to the EHS section of the University's website for more information.

First Aid Kits

Departments and research groups have their own first aid and spill kits on each floor. 

First Aid Officers

There are first aid officers located on each floor.  A list of first aid officers is located on the front of your area's first aid kit.  Security personnel are also trained in first aid procedures.  A security officer is located in the building 24 x 7 on the ground floor in the atrium, and can be contacted on ext 42480 or 42481.
